Baby Signing:

If you’re looking for Baby Signing in Uckfield, then look no further. Here are the Back on Track Clinic we offer a weekly group for parents and infants, to show you the basics in Baby Signing.

Baby Signing is a method of teaching communication with infants and toddlers, using specific baby hand gestures and finger signs to express words or desires.

For generations, infants and children have been signing with deaf parents, and this gave two researchers the idea to develop this further. Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn (and later, Joseph Garcia) researched the subject, closely followed the vocabulary of American Sign Language and developed it into sign language for babies.

Facts about Baby signing:

Infants often know what they want, but cannot express it. However, as Baby Signing establishes the use of the fine muscles of the hands and hand-to-eye coordination very early on, it makes signing an extremely useful tool to aid communication.

Everyday words that are used in our Uckfield Baby Signing sessions include:
sleep - milk - hungry - thirsty - hurt - wet - teddy - dog - play
mummy - daddy -
more

This develops the infant’s understanding of everyday language and their use, before speech is understood.

Uckfield Baby Signing is based at the Back On Track Clinic, and always makes the signing experience fun for both parents and infants.

Specially written songs are played and sung along to whilst learning the signs, and the stories are changed every two weeks to allow new signs to be learned and vocabularies developed. And for those who like homework, the songs can be taken home for continued learning away from the Uckfield Baby Signing group.

The atmosphere is relaxed, helping to develop social skills for the child and giving parents an opportunity for support and to make new friends.
