Pilates Uckfield:

Pilates (pronounced pil-ah-tees) is a gentle but very effective fitness system, developed over 85 years in the early 20th century, by Joseph Pilates from Germany. The aim is to elongate, strengthen and balance the body, using the mind to control the major muscles of the body (hence its originally intended name of ‘Contrology’). The major muscles primarily targeted are the abdominal groups, buttocks, lower back and hips, collectively termed as the body’s ‘core’ muscles.

The principles of Pilates are based on control, correct alignment and centering of the core, with the movements precise, controlled and smooth, and the correct breathing technique adopted throughout. By carrying out small, controlled movements alongside optimum breathing and correct spinal alignment, these muscles are gradually strengthened, giving vital support to the spine.

Why Pilates?

Pilates is well known to increase body awareness and control, as well as improving alignment and posture. Because of this, it is a fantastic means of strengthening the protective, deep core muscles of the body, thus minimising bodily pain and discomfort. And although the core muscles of the abdominals and back are strengthened from the start, the movement sequences are varied and their complexity gradually heightened, thus achieving a stronger and leaner torso.

The type of Pilates can vary, with some classes using only mat work and others using more individual training with a machine known as a Power Plate. This provides resistance, to build strength and stamina faster and to readily encourage correct alignment and posture, and is a fun ideal for anyone who has a busy lifestyle. Uckfield Pilates instructors are fully qualified to undertake both types.

The Pilates classes in Uckfield focus on specific areas of the body, while at the same time carrying out movement patterns that incorporate the whole body. This re-educates and restores optimum muscular and skeletal function.
