Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system. These conditions include the joints, and muscles of the body, particularly those of the spine.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic comes from the Greek word ‘chiropraktikos’, meaning ‘effective treatment by hand’.Although spinal manipulation can be traced back to the time of Hippocrates, the profession itself officially originated in the 1890s in the USA, started by D.D. Palmer and further developed by his son B.J. Palmer in the early 20th century.D.D. Palmer believed strongly in the influence of the nervous system in health. After taking a full medical history a chiropractic examination involves a range of diagnostic methods, including structural, orthopaedic and neurological assessments, and may require skeletal imaging using X-rays if required.
The examination process
Your spinal column is a series of movable bones that begin at the base of your skull and end in the centre of your hips.
Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form a complicated network that influences every living tissue in your body.
If these nerves are irritated for any reason, they commonly bring about pain, muscle spasm and a number of sensations, for example tingling or numbness in varying parts of the body. Causes of problems in the spine can be numerous.
Back On Track Chiropractic treatment varies depending on the presented condition, but will consist of a wide range of specific gentle manipulation and soft tissue techniques designed to improve the function of the joints, relieving pain and muscle spasm.
The number of sessions needed depends on the individual, and will always be discussed throughout the care. Alongside the physical care, we also place an emphasis on nutritional and exercise programs and lifestyle modifications for promoting physical and mental health. While chiropractors make no use of drugs or surgery, they do refer patients for medical care if indicated. The chiropractors at Back On Track have an excellent relationship with the local GPs of Uckfield and the surrounding areas.
